چکیده

The absence of conventional long range order in the classical two dimensional xy model is introduced. Two main types of excitations of this model, spin wave and vortices, are analyzed in the framework of generalized theory of elasticity. The Hamiltonian is then mapping onto the two dimensional Coulomb gas model and then critical temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is located by a renormalization group technique.

Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition Line for the Two Dimensional Coulomb Gas

With a renormalization group approach, we study the pressure of the two dimensional Coulomb Gas along a small piece of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition line, i.e. the boundary of the dipole region in the activity-temperature phase-space.

Equation of state in the fugacity format for the two-dimensional Coulomb gas

We derive the exact general form of the equation of state, in the fugacity format, for the two-dimensional Coulomb gas. Our results are valid in the conducting phase of the Coulomb gas, for temperatures above the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The derivation of the equation of state is based on the knowledge of the general form of the short-distance expansion of the correlation functions of th...

The screening phase transitions in the two-dimensional Coulomb gas

The Mayer series of a Coulomb gas with fixed ultraviolet cutoff is studied in two dimensions. In particular, we show the existence of infinitely many thresholds T n = (e2/8~k)(11/2n) 1, k =Boltzmann's constant, e=electr ic charge, n = 1, 2,..., which are conjectured to reflect a sequence of transitions from pure multipole phase (the Kosterlitz Thouless region) to a plasma phase (the Debye scree...

Possible first order transition in the two-dimensional Ginzburg- Landau model induced by thermally fluctuating vortex cores

We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model of a neutral superfluid in the vicinity of the vortex unbinding transition. The model is mapped onto an effective interacting vortex gas by a systematic perturbative elimination of all fluctuating degrees of freedom (amplitude and phase of the order parameter field) except the vortex positions. In the Coulomb gas descriptions derived previously...

An Alternative Field Theory for the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition

We extend a Gaussian model for the two-dimensional Coulomb gas by a term which models the increase of charge fluctuations in the presence of an internal electrical field. The resulting Hamiltonian, expressed as a functional of the internal potential, has a surprising large scale limit: The additional term simply counts the number of maxima and minima of the potential. The model allows for a tra...
